Market, terminology and context

Millimetres preserve whole-number source dimensions for many international formats. Centimetres are convenient for reading; metres are convenient for area.

Method and calculation

Convert both sides to metres before square-metre calculations. Never multiply values expressed in different units.

Worked example

1200 mm = 1.2 m and 800 mm = 0.8 m; 1.2 × 0.8 = 0.96 m².

What remains variable

Canonical dimensions remain attached to a named format and source; unit conversion does not create a new format.
