Short answer

For one orientation, count = floor(space length ÷ pallet length) × floor(space width ÷ pallet width). Test the 90° rotation and compare.

Market, terminology and context

The method counts complete, non-overlapping rectangles in a uniform grid. It reports the better of two simple orientations.

Method and calculation

Use one consistent unit, divide each clear space side by its pallet side, take whole counts and multiply.

Worked example

A 6000 × 2400 mm space with 1200 × 800 mm pallets gives 5 × 3 = 15 straight. The rotated check gives 7 × 2 = 14.
