Nominal trailer length alone cannot determine capacity. Use measured clear length and width, the actual pallet footprint and both orientations.

Method and calculation

For a 48 × 40 pallet, test floor(length ÷ 48) × floor(width ÷ 40), then the 40 × 48 rotation.

Worked example

If two 48-inch sides fit across but only two 40-inch sides also fit, lengthwise remainders decide the better orientation.

What remains variable

The result says nothing about gross weight, axle distribution, cargo stability, loading sequence or legality.
